Sounds like a nerve is exposed. You may need to seek a different X-ray and see a specialist. Insist that re-evaluated. This is not normal.

This could be a case of Nico - Neuralgia Inducing Osteonecrosis of cavitation. Tooth extractions, root canals, crowns, etc. This can be a "non-clinical reason" (without obvious symptoms of infection), a bone infection. Unfortunately, your dentist can not believe "in this type of diagnosis.
